Meeting the Monarch of Bimini: The Story Behind Our Great Hammerhead Collection

There is a specific kind of silence that happens when you’re twelve feet underwater off the coast of Bimini, Bahamas. It’s not a quiet silence: it’s a heavy, expectant one. You’re kneeling on the white sand, your regulator rhythmically hissing, and your eyes are scanning the hazy blue edge of the visibility. Then, out of the void, a shadow appears.
It’s not just any shadow. It’s tall. It’s jagged. It’s the unmistakable, six-foot-tall dorsal fin of a Great Hammerhead Shark (Sphyrna mokarran).
At Moss Apparel, we don’t just put cool pictures on shirts. We put moments on them. The Great Hammerhead Collection is the heartbeat of our brand, born from cold dives, salty gear, and a deep-seated respect for the "Monarch of Bimini."
This is the story of how we went from the sand flats of the Bahamas to the premium conservation apparel you’re wearing today.
THE MONARCH OF BIMINI
If the ocean had a royal family, the Great Hammerhead would be the eccentric, slightly intimidating king who everyone respects but no one fully understands.
These aren't your garden-variety sharks. Growing up to 20 feet long, they are the largest of the nine hammerhead species. But it’s their "hammer": formally known as the cephalofoil: that makes them a masterpiece of evolution. It’s essentially a 360-degree sensory array, allowing them to pin down stingrays (their favorite snack) with surgical precision.
In Bimini, Bahamas, these sharks are legendary. It’s one of the few places on Earth where these critically endangered giants gather in the winter months. To see one up close is to realize that "stunning" is an understatement. They move with a prehistoric grace that makes you feel very small, very lucky, and very committed to making sure they stay around.
SHARK PHOTOGRAPHY: BEHIND THE LENS
Photographing a Great Hammerhead isn't about "point and shoot." It’s about patience, buoyancy, and not dropping your camera when a four-meter predator decides to check out its reflection in your lens.
When Robert Moss, our founder and photographer, set out to capture the images for this collection, the goal wasn't just a "cool shark pic." We wanted the texture. We wanted the power. We wanted you to see the scratches on the skin and the intensity in the eye.
The images on our Bimini Shark Lab Collection aren't stock photos bought off the internet. They are the result of hours spent in the Bahamian current, waiting for that one perfect, high-contrast moment where the shark’s silhouette tells the whole story.
When you wear the Hammerhead Jaws, Moss Apparel, Shark, Hoodie, you aren't just wearing a graphic; you're wearing a piece of a real encounter.

PARTNERING WITH THE BIMINI SHARK LAB
We knew from day one that if we were going to sell Shark Photography apparel, we had to give back to the source. That’s why we partnered with the Bimini Biological Field Station Foundation, better known as the Bimini Shark Lab.
The Lab is a world leader in elasmobranch research. They spend their days (and nights) tagging, tracking, and studying these animals to understand how we can protect them from the threats of overfishing and habitat loss. Great Hammerheads are currently listed as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List. Without the data the Shark Lab provides, international policy would have no teeth.

THE IMPACT: 10/2/10
We don't just talk about conservation; we bake it into the price tag. We want you to know exactly what your purchase is doing for the world. We call it the 10/2/10 Rule:
- 10% DIRECT TO CONSERVATION: Every single purchase from the Great Hammerhead collection sends 10% of the revenue straight to the Bimini Shark Lab. No loopholes, no "net profits" math: just 10% of the top line.
- 2 TREES PLANTED: For every item sold, we plant two trees through our reforestation partners. Why? Because healthy forests mean healthy oceans.
- 10 BOTTLES REMOVED: We also fund the removal of 10 plastic bottles from the ocean for every product purchased.
When you buy a Hammerhead Hoodie, you are literally helping clean the water, reforest the land, and fund the science needed to keep the Monarch of Bimini on its throne.
WHY WE DO IT
At the end of the day, Moss Apparel is about connection. It’s about bridging the gap between the wild places we love and the lives we lead. We want our clothing to be a reminder that there is still a lot of "wild" left in the world, and it’s worth protecting.
The Great Hammerhead is a symbol of that wildness. It’s powerful, it’s mysterious, and it’s vulnerable. By wearing this collection, you aren't just a customer: you're an ambassador. You're the person who explains to a friend what the Bimini Shark Lab is. You're the person who cares about the 10 bottles removed from the sea.
Stay wild. Stay comfortable. And let’s keep the Monarchs swimming.
