Lone Coyote: The Story Behind a Black and White Fine Art Wildlife Photograph

Lone Coyote California Highway by Robert Moss – Fine Art Photography Print

FREE SHIPPING FOR PURCHASES OVER $60

I made this photograph during fall in California, outside of Death Valley, on a quiet road between Joshua Tree and Death Valley. The road is not highly traveled. A lone coyote was roaming directly in the middle of it, using the highway as an easy way to get around.

I pulled over quickly and grabbed my camera.

The moment was pure luck. I was simply in the right place at the right time. It became one of my favorite photos of all time: and it taught me the value of always keeping a camera close by.

That encounter became Lone Coyote California Highway Aluminum Print - Fine Art Photography by Robert Moss. Priced from $60.00, this striking black and white aluminum print brings the resilient spirit of the American West into a home, office, studio, or professional space.

The Field Story

I did not plan this photograph. I was traveling along a quiet California road when I saw the coyote moving through the middle of the highway. Rather than crossing quickly and disappearing into the surrounding landscape, it was using the road as an easy route.

I pulled over as quickly as I could and reached for my camera. There was no elaborate setup and no opportunity to prepare for the encounter. The image came from paying attention, reacting quickly, and being ready when the scene appeared.

That is what makes this photograph important to me. Wildlife photography often involves patience, but it also requires readiness. Some moments develop slowly. Others are over almost immediately. Keeping a camera nearby gives me a chance to respond without forcing the scene.

This coyote was moving through its environment on its own terms. I did not need to call it, chase it, bait it, or alter its behavior. I observed what was happening and made the photograph when the opportunity arrived.

The result is both a wildlife photograph and a record of an unexpected encounter. I see the coyote as capable, independent, and adapted to a changing landscape. Its presence on an empty road gives the image a quiet tension. The highway belongs to people, but in that moment, it was being used by a wild animal simply trying to move through its surroundings.

Why I Chose Black and White

I chose a black and white presentation because it keeps the image focused on shape, contrast, texture, and movement.

Without color competing for attention, the coyote becomes the clear subject. The viewer can study its position on the road, the form of its body, and the open space around it. The restrained palette also gives the photograph a timeless quality that works well as wildlife photography wall art or animal wall art.

The road acts as a strong leading line. It draws the eye into the frame and toward the coyote, while the surrounding emptiness reinforces the sense of distance. The composition is direct. The subject is easy to find. The space around it gives the image room to breathe.

Deep blacks add weight to the photograph. The lighter areas retain detail without overwhelming the subject. This balance is especially effective in a minimalist interior, where a black and white wildlife photograph can create a bold focal point without introducing a busy color scheme.

For me, the image is about more than a coyote on a highway. It is about resilience, adaptation, and the importance of noticing what is happening in front of me.

Aluminum DIBOND® Craft

I chose aluminum for this fine art photography print because the material supports the clarity and contrast of the photograph.

The print is produced on Premium Aluminum DIBOND®, with two white layers and a sturdy black polyethylene core. It has a rigid 3mm, or 0.12-inch, thickness. The surface is moisture-resistant and UV-protected, making it a practical option for long-term display.

The image is printed directly in high definition. Its matte, glare-free finish helps preserve crisp details and deep blacks, while the white-coated surface creates a subtle silky gloss in lighter areas. That combination gives the photograph a clean, contemporary appearance.

A professional hanging kit is included, so the print is ready to install. The result is a durable piece of metal photography print artwork designed for modern spaces, professional offices, galleries, and nature-inspired interiors.

Choosing a Size

I offer the Lone Coyote print in four sizes:

  • 20x30 cm / 8x12 inches: A compact option for a shelf, small wall, entryway, or gallery arrangement.
  • 40x60 cm / 16x24 inches: A versatile size for bedrooms, offices, hallways, and smaller living spaces.
  • 60x90 cm / 24x36 inches: A strong statement piece for a main wall or above a desk, console, or sofa.
  • 70x100 cm / 28x40 inches: The largest option for creating an immediate focal point in a spacious room or professional setting.

I recommend choosing the largest size that fits comfortably within your wall and surrounding furniture. The road and open space benefit from room to be seen, especially when the print is displayed on its own.

Styling Ideas for Modern Interiors

I designed this image to work with simple, functional interiors. Its black and white palette pairs naturally with white walls, charcoal furniture, warm wood, concrete, brushed metal, and muted earth tones.

For a minimalist room, I would display the print by itself with generous space around it. In a home office, it can create a focused visual anchor above a desk or behind a reading chair. In a hallway, the road creates visual direction and helps draw the eye through the space.

The image also works well in a collection of fine art photography prints featuring landscapes, wildlife, or desert environments. I would keep the surrounding frames and colors restrained so the coyote remains the central subject.

I also offer the Lone Coyote photograph on comfortable apparel. Each piece gives me a practical way to carry the image into everyday life.

About Robert Moss

I have been photographing for 10 years across North America, Central America, Southern Africa, Sri Lanka, Australia, the Caribbean, and Europe.

My specialties include North American wildlife and landscapes, the American West, mountain scapes, hawks, pronghorn, bison, deserts, coyotes, and lakes. I also photograph ocean scapes, sharks, fish, underwater life, and mangroves.

My work has been seen in Greenwich Freepress, select REI locations for Apparel, and Designspec for Fine Art.

For me, nature photography begins with respect. I believe the best wildlife photographs come from observing rather than interfering: allowing an animal, landscape, or moment to exist naturally and being patient enough to capture it as it unfolds. My goal is not simply to photograph wildlife, but to create images that convey the character, beauty, scale, and vulnerability of the natural world.

I never stress, chase, bait, corner, touch, or significantly alter an animal’s behavior for a photograph. I use long lenses and let wildlife control the encounter. Early morning, late afternoon, storms, fog, backlighting, and unusual conditions often produce the best nature photographs.

From wildlife encounters to remote landscapes and underwater environments, I am drawn to moments that remind me how extraordinary the wild still is. I approach each photograph with the intention of keeping the scene authentic, preserving the natural behavior of the subject and the atmosphere of the place.

That philosophy carries through to Moss Apparel and Moss Fine Art. The photographs are not only meant to be seen; they are intended to create a greater connection with the places and species they represent.

Conservation is at the heart of that mission because this approach becomes harder each year as the world changes, wildlife numbers decline, and natural spaces are threatened. Through Moss Apparel and Moss Fine Art, 10% of profits support nonprofit organizations working in wildlife conservation, habitat protection, and ocean restoration.
