The opportunity came when the eagle settled on a branch. The bird was unobstructed, and I had a clear line of sight. I was still shooting from a long distance, so patience and stability were essential. Once the composition came together, I took the photograph.
The resulting portrait preserves the eagle’s presence without disrupting the encounter. That is important to me. The image came from observation, distance, and timing: not from forcing the scene.
Working Through the Technical Challenge
The main environmental challenge was the thick underbrush of the Vermont wilderness. I needed to get around branches without losing the eagles or damaging the surrounding habitat. Even after reaching a workable position, I had to avoid branches entering the frame.
The other challenge was staying still while photographing from a long distance. With a telephoto lens, small movements can affect the final image. I needed to remain steady and wait for the eagle to settle into a position where the portrait could be made clearly.
I captured the photograph with a Canon camera and a telephoto lens. The long lens allowed me to work from a respectful distance while still creating a detailed portrait. This approach also gave the eagle room to continue its natural behavior around the nest.

About Robert Moss
For me, nature photography begins with respect. I believe the best wildlife photographs come from observing rather than interfering by allowing an animal, landscape, or moment to exist naturally and being patient enough to capture it as it unfolds. My goal is not simply to photograph wildlife, but to create images that convey the character, beauty, scale, and vulnerability of the natural world.
I have been photographing for 10 years across North America, Central America, Southern Africa, Sri Lanka, Australia, the Caribbean, and Europe. My specialties include North American wildlife and landscapes, the American West, mountain scapes, hawks, pronghorn, bison, deserts, coyotes, lakes, ocean scapes, sharks, fish, underwater life, and mangroves.

I never stress, chase, bait, corner, touch, or significantly alter an animal’s behavior for a photograph. I use long lenses and let wildlife control the encounter. Early morning, late afternoon, storms, fog, backlighting, and unusual conditions often produce the best nature photographs.
From wildlife encounters to remote landscapes and underwater environments, I am drawn to moments that remind us how extraordinary the wild still is. I approach each photograph with the intention of keeping the scene authentic, preserving the natural behavior of the subject and the atmosphere of the place.
