Why I Photograph Bighorn Sheep

I have spent years photographing wildlife across North America, including bighorn sheep in the American West. These animals represent the rugged character of mountain landscapes: sure-footed, alert, and perfectly adapted to steep terrain.

When I photograph bighorn sheep, I use a long lens and give them space. I never chase, bait, corner, touch, or significantly alter an animal’s behavior for a photograph. The encounter belongs to the animal. My job is to observe patiently and capture the moment as it naturally unfolds.

That approach is central to Moss Apparel. Every wildlife design begins with a real photograph from the field. The goal is not to create a fictional animal or an artificial scene. It is to bring the character of real wildlife into an everyday product while helping support the places and species that inspire the work.

The Bighorn Sheep Fun designs were created for our WYldlife Fund Conservation Collection. The collection connects wildlife-inspired apparel with conservation funding through a partnership with the WYldlife Fund, an organization that helps businesses connected to tourism and recreation invest in Wyoming’s wildlife.

From a practical standpoint, the collection offers four dependable layers: a cotton T-shirt, a long sleeve shirt, a crewneck sweatshirt, and a hoodie. All four feature the same bighorn sheep design and are made for regular wear.

The Conservation Connection

The WYldlife Fund works to evolve the traditional conservation funding model. Its mission is to broaden resources for Wyoming wildlife through innovative fundraising with businesses that rely on the state’s wildlife and outdoor recreation.

That model matters because wildlife conservation depends on broad support. Habitat, wildlife movement, research, education, and responsible outdoor recreation all require sustained investment. The WYldlife Fund works as a partner to the Wyoming Game and Fish Department and supports projects that advance wildlife habitat, research, and education across Wyoming.

For the Moss Apparel WYldlife Fund Collection, 10% of profits are donated quarterly to the WYldlife Fund. I want that connection to be direct and easy to understand: you choose a durable piece of apparel, and part of the profit supports conservation work connected to Wyoming’s wildlife.

Why Bighorn Sheep Matter

Bighorn sheep are more than a recognizable symbol of the American West. They are part of the larger network of mountain habitats, migration routes, and outdoor spaces that make Wyoming important to wildlife and people.

Protecting wildlife requires more than admiration. It requires habitat protection, thoughtful management, education, and cooperation between conservation groups, public agencies, businesses, residents, and visitors. The WYldlife Fund’s approach recognizes that businesses connected to tourism and recreation have a role to play in sustaining the landscapes that support their communities.

That is why I wanted this design to be part of the collection. A bighorn sheep image can start a conversation, but conservation funding helps turn appreciation into action.

About Robert Moss

For me, nature photography begins with respect. I believe the best wildlife photographs come from observing rather than interfering: allowing an animal, landscape, or moment to exist naturally and being patient enough to capture it as it unfolds.

My goal is not simply to photograph wildlife, but to create images that convey the character, beauty, scale, and vulnerability of the natural world. From wildlife encounters to remote landscapes and underwater environments, I am drawn to moments that remind us how extraordinary the wild still is.

I approach each photograph with the intention of keeping the scene authentic, preserving the natural behavior of the subject and the atmosphere of the place. That philosophy carries through to Moss Apparel and Moss Fine Art. The photographs are not only meant to be seen; they are intended to create a greater connection with the places and species they represent.

Conservation is at the heart of that mission. Through Moss Apparel and Moss Fine Art, 10% of profits support nonprofit organizations working in wildlife conservation, habitat protection, and ocean restoration.
