Ocean wall art can bring movement, color, and a direct connection to nature into a room. My photograph, School of Fish over Volcanic Reef, captures that connection beneath the surface of Costa Rica. This is one of my favorite types of ocean photography to make: an image that works visually as modern wall art while also communicating why protected marine habitats matter. The scene is beautiful, but it is also evidence of what can happen when marine wildlife has room to flourish.

The dive behind the photograph

I captured this image in Costa Rica during the spring while scuba diving around a volcanic island. I descended approximately 60 feet and began drifting with the current. There was life moving in every direction. Huge schools of fish surrounded the island, creating a constantly shifting pattern above the reef.

Drifting with the current helped me conserve oxygen and stay with the environment instead of fighting against it. Underwater photography requires patience. The scene is always moving, and the conditions can change quickly. At this depth, I was working with limited light, murky water, and the challenge of balancing the available underwater light with my own equipment.

I used a Sealifepro camera with large lights to capture the school as it moved across the reef. The lights helped define the fish and the rocky structure beneath them, but the water still had its own character. The final photograph retains the atmosphere of being deep underwater rather than making the scene look artificially perfect.

That matters to me. I want my photographs to show real places and real conditions. The image should communicate the scale of the environment, the density of marine life, and the feeling of moving through the water with the current.
