MEET THE GREAT HAMMERHEAD
The Great Hammerhead (Sphyrna mokarran) is the largest of all hammerhead species. They can grow up to 20 feet long, though most average around 10 to 13 feet. Despite their size and "apex predator" status, they are incredibly vulnerable.
Currently, Great Hammerheads are listed as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List. Their populations have been decimated by overfishing, largely driven by the high value of their large fins in international markets. Because they are slow-growing and late-maturing, they simply cannot replenish their numbers fast enough to keep up with the pressure from commercial fisheries.
In Bimini, these sharks show "seasonal site fidelity." This means that for a few months every winter and spring, a specific group of hammerheads returns to the same small patch of ocean. This makes Bimini one of the few places on Earth where researchers can consistently study them in the wild. It also makes this area a vital hub for shark conservation clothing and awareness.
